Head toward Amarillo, then north/northwest toward Dalhart and into New Mexico (commonly via US-385 and US-87 toward Clayton).
From the Clayton area: route toward Springer, then NM-21 through Cimarron, connect to US-64 to Eagle Nest, then NM-38 into Red River.

Road Conditions

Before you travel, check nmroads.com for the latest conditions. It is the New Mexico Department of Transportation’s official road-conditions resource, and it is designed to provide real-time updates on closures, advisories, and driving conditions as they change. In other words, if you are looking for the most current information available, NMRoads is the source NMDOT updates directly and continuously, making it the best place to confirm conditions before you head into the mountains.
Parking + Festival Entrances
From NM-38/Main Street, turn onto Independence Trail and go to the Municipal Lot at Independence Trail & River Street. Brandenburg Park is directly west of the parking lot.

Flying In
Fly into Northern New Mexico and let the drive become part of the experience. Whether you want the most flight flexibility, the quickest drive, or the closest runway to the mountains, there is an easy way to arrive.

Albuquerque International Sunport (ABQ) is the go-to choice for frequent flight options and straightforward connections. From ABQ, you’ll have a scenic drive of about three hours to Red River using the Albuquerque route.

Santa Fe Regional Airport (SAF) is a smart, streamlined entry point if you prefer a shorter drive and a quieter airport experience. From Santa Fe, it’s only about two hours to Red River via NM-599 to US-285/US-84, then NM-68, NM-522, and NM-38.

Taos Regional Airport (TSM) is the closest option by drive time and the most “arrive-in-the-mountains” feeling. Flight options are more limited, but once you land, Red River is roughly 45 minutes away.
